At our November meeting, 3RDW welcomed Forest Hills' newly elected mayor, Patricia Demarco, for a powerful and thought-provoking meeting.
The event, held at Goodfellas Restaurant and Tavern in Swissvale, PA, brought together community members, local leaders, and some of Patricia’s students from Chatham University to hear her speak on the Special Power of Women in Good Governance.
The lively discussion that followed left everyone feeling energized and hopeful about the future of democracy and women’s leadership.
This gathering was part of the ongoing series of monthly meetings hosted by 3RDW, which meets every fourth Thursday of the month to build a stronger, more inclusive political future for women in the Southwestern PA region. The November meeting was especially memorable, not only because of Patricia’s inspiring message but also due to the passionate voices of the youth who joined us. Their call for a youth-focused Democratic organization, similar to Turning Point USA but aimed at engaging young Democrats on campuses nationwide, sparked a meaningful conversation about the power of youth activism.
The Special Power of Women in Good Governance
Patricia Demarco’s presentation centered on the unique and vital role women play in governance. She began by acknowledging the historical challenges women have faced in political leadership, often working behind the scenes in patriarchal systems. Yet, she emphasized that today’s political climate demands a new kind of leadership—one that is compassionate, balanced, and inclusive.
Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in government. Patricia shared striking statistics: women hold only 26% of Senate seats, 29% in the House, and 25.4% of mayoral positions in cities with populations over 30,000. These numbers highlight the ongoing structural barriers women face, including pay and wealth gaps, limited access to education and credit, and caregiving responsibilities. Women of color face even greater challenges, with disparities in wealth, health, and opportunities.
Patricia introduced the idea of matriarchal leadership as a transformative model. This style focuses on deep listening, celebrating individual strengths, supporting others, and investing in personal growth. It contrasts with the hierarchical and competitive nature of traditional patriarchal systems. She pointed to historical examples like Abigail Adams and Frances Perkins, who led with moral clarity and compassion, proving that women’s leadership can create governments that prioritize dignity, equality, and justice.
Youth Engagement and the Future of Democracy
One of the most exciting parts of the evening was the participation of Patricia’s students from Chatham University. Their energy and ideas brought fresh perspectives to the discussion. They voiced a strong need for an organization that encourages Democratic youth to become more active on campuses and in their communities. This idea mirrors the influence of Turning Point USA but would focus on mobilizing young Democrats to strengthen democracy and counteract opposing forces.
The students’ enthusiasm reminded everyone that the future of democracy depends on engaging young people. Their voices are crucial in shaping policies and leadership styles that reflect inclusivity and fairness. The meeting ended with a shared sense of purpose: to support women leaders like Patricia Demarco and to build platforms that empower youth participation in politics.

Why Women’s Leadership Matters for Democracy
Patricia’s message highlighted that women bring a different approach to leadership—one that can help heal divisions and build stronger communities. Their leadership style often includes:
Listening carefully to diverse voices
Encouraging collaboration rather than competition
Focusing on long-term well-being over short-term gains
Supporting others to grow and succeed
These qualities are essential for a healthy democracy. When women lead, governments tend to be more inclusive and just.
Supporting women in politics means supporting democracy itself.
How You Can Support Women Leaders and Youth Engagement
The meeting showed that change requires action from all of us. Here are some ways to get involved:
Attend local events like the 3RDW Speaker Series to learn and connect
Support women candidates running for office in your community
Encourage young people to register to vote and participate in political discussions
Advocate for organizations that engage youth in Democratic politics on campuses
Share stories of women leaders who inspire you to build awareness
By taking these steps, we can help create a political environment where women’s voices are heard and youth are empowered to lead.
The November 2025 meeting with Patricia Demarco was a reminder that democracy thrives when women lead with heart and when young people are active participants. The energy in the room was contagious, and the ideas shared will continue to inspire action in Forest Hills and beyond.
